The determination of leaf area index (LAI) is essential to understand the process of conversion of radiation into forest biomass. Currently, it is possible to estimate LAI from satellite images. However, there are not many studies related to the effect of the atmospheric correction of the images on the estimation of LAI in homogeneous Eucalyptus forests. The aim of this study was to verify if images with atmospheric correction can generate more accurate results, in comparison to raw images. The ceptometer was used to estimate LAI in field of 5 clones planted in the cities of Três Marias-MG and Borebi-SP. It was used Rapid Atmospheric Correction tool to atmospheric correction in the images provided by Rapideye sensor. The index of simple vegetation ratio was calculated from the raw images and with atmospheric correction to compare with the data collected in the field. The relation between the vegetation index of pre-processed and raw images presented a linear relationship and an angular coefficient sensitive to the date and place of image collection. The model adjusted from the image with atmospheric correction obtained better performance in relation to the image without processing, however there was no significant gain and the two methods can be considered for the estimation of LAI in clonal Eucalyptus plantations.
